The founder of the globally renowned Bajaj Group of Companies, Shri Jamnalal Bajaj, became an entrepreneur at the tender age of 11. Without a degree or formal education, he built the family business with a unique vision and a sharp eye for opportunities.
He is more widely known for his role in the Indian freedom struggle and for his close association with Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, Gandhiji endearingly referred to him as his 'merchant prince.’
On July 14, 1938, Shri Kishenchand Kaycee registered Radio Lamp Works Ltd. to distribute Italian-made radio lamps. Its board included notable individuals such as Shri Vidya Prakash, Shri Ved Prakash, and Lala Shiv Raj.
Small ideas, big impact– what drives the company today was at its core from the very beginning! Bajaj Electricals, formerly known as Radio Lamp Works Ltd., commenced operations in 1939 by assuming the distribution of Italian-made radio lamps.
In 1940, when Italy entered the Second World War, Radio Lamp Works Ltd. faced disruptions in its original plans due to the loss of technical collaboration with the Italian firm.
Consequently, Kaycee Glass Works Ltd. was established to domestically manufacture glass shells for electric lamps. The sprawling factory was set up in Shikohabad, Uttar Pradesh.
In 1942, at the young age of 28, upon the demise of Jamnalalji, his son Kamalnayanji took on the mantle of the head of the group.
Shri Kamalnayan Bajaj wore many hats in his lifetime-thinker, politician, philanthropist, and entrepreneur - and he effortlessly embraced each role.
In 1950, Hind Lamps Ltd. was born out of collaboration and ideas stemming from different corners and cultures around the world. It marked a partnership between Kaycee Glass Works Ltd. and four European companies: Messrs NV Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken, Holland; Messrs Associated Electrical Industries Ltd., London; Messrs General Electric Co. Ltd., London; and Messrs Crompton Parkinson.
It was time for Radio Lamp Works Ltd. to adopt a new name, identity, and renewed purpose. On October 1, 1960, the company changed its name to Bajaj Electricals Ltd., as Radio Lamp Works Ltd. no longer accurately represented the company's diversified activities and aspirations. It was the moment for Bajaj Electricals to reach for the stars.
A proud moment occurred when Bajaj Electricals launched India’s first indigenous astro-telescope, unveiled by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri (the then Railway Minister) at the Jantar Mantar observatory in Delhi.
On the day of completing a successful 25 years, the morning papers highlighted Bajaj Electricals' glory, setting the tone for day-long celebrations. Dignitaries, including the Chief Guest and the Governor of Maharashtra, Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Railway Minister, attended the gala event in Delhi.
This occasion also marked the commencement of Dealer Meets, a pioneering effort to bring together individuals who collaborated in creating a common ground based on friendship and trust. These efforts aimed to strengthen the foundations that would go a long way in the business.
Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj took over as the Managing Director of Bajaj Electricals from 1970 to 1980. Later, in 1991, he assumed the role of Chairman and held this position until his demise.
He strongly advocated for ethical business practices and, in 1966, founded the Council of Fair Business Practices (CFBP). Additionally, he played a key role in the establishment of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). Remarkably, both of these organisations remain active even today.
In 1977, Bajaj Electricals pioneered one-of-its-kind Consumer Meets, which served as a treasure trove for new ideas, concerns, and customer feedback - an approach that was ahead of its time.
Shri Shekhar Bajaj assumed the role of Chief Executive and has held the position of Chairman since 1994. A firm believer in the power of his people, he capitalised on the inherent strength of the company, transforming it into a household name. Additionally, he has served as the president of ASSOCHAM, IMC, ELCOMA, and IFMA.
A company that began as a humble and small enterprise in 1938 had metamorphosed into a Rs.71 crore company in 50 years. This milestone was a crucial moment to pause, reflect on the past, and pave the way for the future.
In 1988, Bajaj Electricals dedicated its Golden Jubilee to its most important contributors, the consumers, by initiating new measures in their favour.
Starting in 2001, Bajaj Electricals collaborated with Midea, Disney, Morphy Richards, Trilux Lenze, Securiton, Delta Controls Inc., Ruud Lighting US, and more to bring in advanced offerings.
The new logo symbolised its journey towards a radiant future while preserving the heritage of its past as a trusted and admired Indian brand.
Bajaj Electricals adopted a vermilion orange shade and a new logo: a forward-looking eye, which represents the company's focus on the future and readiness to accept challenges.
The company's philosophy of 'Inspiring Trust' was ingrained to reassure its loyal customers of continued transparency.
Bajaj Electricals has always been a frontrunner in Sports Lighting Solutions, providing a better ambiance for players, spectators, and TV audiences alike.
For the 2011 Cricket World Cup, BAJAJ was responsible for lighting up the Wankhede Stadium, the venue for the final match where India walked away with the Cup.
To commemorate the 13th anniversary of the victory in the Kargil War, a flag mast was inaugurated at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras. Installed by Bajaj Electricals, this was India's first monumental flag at such a great height of 10,800 ft. (3,300 m).
This patriotic spot is frequently visited by tourists passing through NH1, always serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Indian Army.
Shri Anant Bajaj was instated as the Joint Managing Director. Known as the man ahead of his time, he took the company to greater heights by focusing on innovation, digital transformation, R&D and creativity.
Bajaj Electricals began as a small company with a big vision and an even bigger heart, and today it stands as one of the most trusted names in the country.
It endeavoured to empower society, supporting various causes, and in turn, society stood by it through 75 incredible years.
Born out of a commitment to technology and innovation, the company unveiled a world-class R&D centre in Mumbai named AB Square as a tribute to its founder, Anant Bajaj.
Bajaj Electricals acquired India’s most trusted non-stick cookware brand, Nirlep Appliances. This strategic move provided Bajaj Electricals with access to a running business setup and other synergistic benefits. Additionally, it granted the company exclusive access to the Nirlep brand, state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, skilled personnel, a distribution network, and intellectual property rights.
In 2021, the BAJAJ brand announced a revamped positioning, promising dependable, durable, and contemporary products, making the brand BUILT FOR LIFE.

In pursuit of fostering a cohesive brand perception among consumers, the Bajaj Group embarked on a mission to consolidate its identity. The outcome? A revitalized logo that embodies utility and strength. Within the logo, a striking blue box encases a distinctive mnemonic with the company name boldly displayed, symbolizing the company’s commitment to innovation and consumer trust.
Bajaj Electricals extended its trademark agreement with UK-based Morphy Richards Limited for an additional fifteen years. This strategic move aims to further develop the brand as a lifestyle consumer brand and unlock superior value creation.
In 2023, Bajaj Electricals launched Nex, a premium brand offering high-performance products backed by superior technology, experience, and design.
The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) business of Bajaj Electricals Limited was demerged to form Bajel Projects Limited. Renowned for its project management skills and commitment to operational excellence, the company is a preferred partner for several states, international governments, and private infrastructural projects. Led by Shekhar Bajaj as Chairman, it is powered by the Bajaj Group's beliefs and values.
