DELIVERED.

The Challenge

Riding the LEDfication trend across the country, NDITA (Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority), Kolkata, also planned to upgrade themselves from conventional streetlight to LED last year. The area covers the IT hub of the city along with the famous entertainment zone – NICCO Park. The decision was made midway during 2017 when the city was also about to host FIFA under – 19 football world cup. The area was the main connector between airport & football stadium (Yuva Bharati Krirangan). Hence, there was an urgency and things had to be finalized within a span of 15 days, which included the survey of the area, LED wattage finalization and payback reports. Delivery of products were also required within 10 to 15 days of PO, so that all the lights can be changed to LED before the world cup started. The city was also just on the brink of celebrating at Durga Puja during September, 2017, increasing urgency of time even further.

The Solution

Bajaj’s EDGE street lighting was installed on the city roads of Kolkata Sector V. The main arterial road from Technopolis to Chingrighata Intersection was installed with 150 W LEDs & the inner roads with 120 W LEDs along with 350 W LED floodlights at crossings on masts. Installation of White LEDs ensured that the aesthetic beauty of the city was maintained, and at the same time retaining the required LUX level. Other such important benefits that resulted from installation of White LEDs by BEL are:

• Energy savings of more than 60% achieved over conventional HPSV street lights and better colour rendering
• Total cost of ownership is less, as the LED products are maintenance free
• ROI is less than one and a half years
• Savings in terms of manpower used for maintaining the infrastructure, as the products have longer life span  of close to 50,000 burning hours
• Better illumination with uniformly lit roads
• Environment friendly lights with protection to ecosystem and wildlife
• Reduced light pollution over Kolkata with dark sky compliant products

How We Did It

Bajaj’s local sales team presented numerous calculations for payback. Samples were given to understand the performance. Meetings were conducted to decide on what products will best meet the requirement. Keeping in mind the urgency of the project and the prestigious location, we had to select a product which could deliver performance and meet the delivery deadlines simultaneously.

After the performance was evaluated and specifications decided upon, the tender was floated and awarded to L1 contractors who bought from Bajaj Electricals. We had to plan the materials in advance, so that we could meet the deadlines. Our supply chain team worked meticulously to make it possible.

In the end, the entire Bajaj Electricals team completed the project successfully within the desired timelines.
